Quick answer
Who repairs garage doors in the Illawarra and Wollongong?
Doormec Garage Doors is a locally owned garage door repair, service and installation business covering the Illawarra, Wollongong, the Illawarra northern suburbs and the NSW South Coast, from Helensburgh through to Nowra. Doormec repairs all garage door types, roller, panel lift, sectional, tilt and commercial, and works on every major brand including B&D, Gliderol, Merlin, Steel-Line and Centurion, whether or not the door was originally supplied by Doormec. The most common repairs are broken torsion and tension springs, frayed or snapped lift cables, failed motors and openers, remotes that have lost their pairing, doors off their tracks and vehicle impact damage. Doormec also supplies and installs new garage doors, roller, panel lift, sectional, automatic and commercial, including on-site measure, removal and disposal of the old door and full Colorbond colour range. A standard service call or basic repair is $170 plus parts, measure and quote for a new door is free, and 24-hour emergency callout is available for doors stuck open, trapped vehicles and unsecured commercial premises. Doormec holds NSW contractor licence 476780C, ABN 16 903 112 027, and can be reached on 0490 774 111.
What we fix
Repairs are what we do most
Every fault below has its own page explaining the symptoms, what actually causes it, how we repair it and what it is likely to involve. No sales fluff, just the detail you would want before ringing anyone.
Broken Garage Door Springs
A broken spring is the single most common reason a garage door stops working, and it is the one repair you should never attempt yourself.

Most openers we are called to are not actually faulty. They are healthy motors fighting a door that has gone out of balance.
Read more UrgentGarage Door Will Not Open or Close
A door stuck open is a security problem and a door stuck closed usually means the car is trapped. Either way this is the call we prioritise.
Read more UrgentBroken or Worn Garage Door Cables
Lift cables carry the entire weight of the door between the spring and the bottom bracket, and they fail from the inside where you cannot see it.
Read moreRoller Door Repairs
Roller doors have fewer parts than sectional doors, which makes them simple to own and more consequential when the one part that matters fails.

What we quote is what you pay
A garage door repair should not be a guessing game, and an older person on their own should not get a different number to anyone else. Here is exactly how we charge, so you can hold us to it, and so you can ask the same questions of anyone else quoting you.
- Our callout is $170, and we say so before we drive out
- Not $0. A free callout still has to be paid for somewhere, and it usually comes back inside the parts price. We would rather charge once, openly, and keep the parts honest.
- Anything past a basic repair is quoted before we start
- You get the number first and you approve it. No work begins on a price you have not heard, and nothing gets added at the end that was not discussed at the start.
- We show you the part that failed
- The broken spring, the frayed cable, the stripped gear. You see what came off your door, and you keep it if you want it.
- We tell you when not to spend money
- If it is a two minute fix, you get told it is a two minute fix. If a fifty year old door is past economic repair, you get told that too, even though the bigger job pays us more.
- Same callout everywhere we go
- Coledale, Berry and Nowra are charged the same as Wollongong. Distance is our problem, not yours.
- Licence 476780C, and you can check it
- Look it up on the NSW Fair Trading licence register before you let anyone touch your door. Ours is 476780C, ABN 16 903 112 027.
Worth knowing before you book anyone. If a garage door company will not put the price in writing before starting work, or cannot give you a licence number, get a second quote. That is not a comment on any particular business, it is just the cheapest insurance there is.
How a garage door works
The spring lifts the door. Not the motor.
A double sectional door weighs 80 to 120kg. The torsion spring counterbalances almost all of it, and the opener only has to overcome friction. That is why a broken spring leaves you completely stuck, and why forcing the opener against one strips the drive gear and turns one repair into two.
- Torsion spring: rated around 10,000 cycles, roughly ten years
- Lift cables: the first thing salt air takes on the coast
- Rollers and tracks: where most of the noise comes from
- Opener: usually the part that dies first, not the door

Roller Garage Doors
The roller door is the workhorse of the Illawarra: fewer parts, less space needed, and a shape that fits garages built long before anyone designed for a sectional track.

If you want the garage door to actually look like part of the house rather than a hole in the front of it, this is the door type that gives you the options.

An opener is only as good as the door underneath it, which is why we test the door before we ever talk about the motor.

Commercial doors get specified on cycles and load, not on catalogue size. Getting that wrong is why some businesses replace a motor every two years.

Six things we will not compromise on
Most of our work comes from someone telling a neighbour. That only happens if the last job was done properly and priced the way it was quoted.
Reliable
We give you a time window and we turn up inside it. If a job runs long we call before we are late, not after.
Honest
If a spring is the fault we replace the spring. We will tell you plainly when a door is worth repairing and when it is not.
Friendly
Ask as many questions as you like. Understanding your own door is the cheapest maintenance there is.
Safe
Torsion springs hold enough stored energy to break bones. We carry the right winding bars and we use them properly.
Caring
Most of our work comes from people who told a neighbour. That only happens if the last job was done right.
Expert
Roller, panel lift, tilt, sectional and commercial. All major brands, including doors we did not install.
Where we work
Four regions, one local team
We are not a franchise dispatching from Sydney. Doormec works this coast every day, and the difference between a Windang door and a Balgownie door is something we plan for rather than discover.
- Marine-grade specification for beachside and lakeside suburbs
- Low-headroom solutions for older Wollongong and Kiama garages
- Wide-span shed doors through Berry, Jamberoo and the Shoalhaven
- Commercial shutters through Unanderra and Port Kembla
Wollongong
Doormec repairs, services and installs garage doors right across the Wollongong local government area, from the CBD and the university suburbs out to Port Kembla and the Cordeaux Heights ridge.

Answers
Common questions before you call
What does Doormec charge for a garage door repair?
A standard service call or basic repair is $170 plus parts if any are needed. Larger work such as spring, cable or motor replacement is quoted before we start, so you get the number before the work rather than after it. Measure and quote for a replacement door is free.
Do you repair garage doors you did not install?
Yes, and that is the majority of our repair work. We service and repair every major brand including B&D, Gliderol, Merlin, Steel-Line and Centurion, whoever supplied or installed the door originally.
How quickly can you get out to a broken garage door?
We run 24-hour emergency callout across the whole service area, and a door stuck open, a trapped vehicle or an unsecured business goes to the front of the queue. Ring 0490 774 111 and we will give you a real time window rather than a vague day.
Which areas does Doormec cover?
The Illawarra, the northern suburbs from Helensburgh down through Thirroul, Bulli and Corrimal, all of Wollongong, and the South Coast through Shellharbour, Kiama, Gerringong, Berry and Nowra.
Is Doormec licensed?
Yes. Doormec Garage Doors holds NSW contractor licence number 476780C and operates under ABN 16 903 112 027, both published in the footer of every page so you can verify them before booking.
