A roller garage door is a continuous curtain of corrugated steel that rolls onto a drum above the opening, guided by a channel on each side. Its counterbalancing spring sits inside the drum, hidden and under permanent tension. Common roller door faults are a broken or weakened drum spring, which makes the door extremely heavy or impossible to lift; a curtain tracking crooked and scoring the guides; rust perforation along the bottom corrugations and bottom rail; seized drum bearings, particularly in coastal and lakeside suburbs; and motor faults on automated doors. Because the spring is inside the drum under tension, roller door spring work is not a do-it-yourself job and requires controlled de-tensioning. Roller doors suit garages with limited side room or headroom where sectional tracks will not fit. A crooked curtain and worn guides are usually the same fault seen from two ends, so both get assessed rather than one being replaced in isolation.

Can a roller door spring be adjusted rather than replaced?
Sometimes. A spring that has simply lost some tension over time can often be re-tensioned, which restores normal lifting effort and costs less than replacement. A spring that has actually broken, or one that is corroded, has to be replaced. We will tell you which one you have rather than defaulting to the bigger job.
How long do roller doors last?
A good quality roller door in an inland suburb will comfortably manage 25 to 30 years with servicing. In heavy coastal exposure like Windang, Thirroul or the Shellharbour village, expect meaningfully less unless it was specified with marine-grade hardware. The curtain often outlives the spring and bearings by a decade.
Are roller doors better than sectional doors?
They are better in different situations rather than better outright. Roller doors need less headroom and side room, cost less and have fewer moving parts, so they suit tight or older garages. Sectional doors offer more style options, better insulation and better sealing, and they let you use the ceiling space above them. The garage usually decides more than the preference does.
