Proper garage door lubricant is applied to rollers, hinges, bearings and the opener rail. Tracks and roller curtains are cleaned, not lubricated.

Replace what is worn
Flat-spotted rollers, elongated hinges and failing bearings are replaced. These are cheap parts that cause expensive damage when ignored.

Re-torque and rebalance
All fixings are re-torqued, the door is rebalanced and the opener limits are reset so the door is not slamming into its stops.

Is a noisy garage door dangerous?
Not usually in itself, but it is a warning. Noise means something is wearing, binding or loose, and those are the same things that eventually break. The single exception is a loud bang, which in a garage very often means a spring has just let go, and that door should not be operated again until it has been looked at.
What can I do myself about a squeaky garage door?
Apply a proper garage door lubricant, either white lithium grease or a silicone spray, to the rollers, hinges, bearings and opener rail. Do not use general penetrating spray, which is a solvent and leaves the parts drier than before. Do not lubricate the tracks or a roller door curtain. If the noise comes back within weeks, something is worn rather than dry.
Which garage door is quietest?
A belt-drive opener on a well maintained sectional door with nylon rollers is by far the quietest combination, and it is worth specifying when the garage sits under a bedroom. Chain drives are noticeably louder, and steel rollers louder again. Insulated sectional panels also dampen sound compared with single-skin doors.
My garage door is making a noise but not moving. What does that mean?
Noise without movement almost always means the drive is disconnected from the door. The usual causes are a stripped nylon drive gear inside the opener, a snapped chain or belt, a failed capacitor leaving the motor humming, or simply the manual release cord having been pulled. Check the release cord first. If the motor still hums or grinds without moving the door, stop operating it, because running a stripped gear makes the damage worse.
