Quick answer
What does a garage door repair involve and what does it cost?
Garage door repair covers the mechanical and electrical faults that stop a door working: broken torsion or tension springs, frayed or snapped lift cables, worn nylon rollers and hinges, misaligned or bent tracks, failed openers and stripped drive gears, remotes that have lost their pairing, misaligned safety beams, and panels or curtains damaged by vehicle impact. Correct diagnosis starts with a balance test: with the opener disengaged, a properly balanced door should feel light through its full travel and hold position wherever it is released. A door that feels heavy or drops has a spring fault, and fitting a new opener to it will simply destroy the new opener too. Doormec repairs all garage door types and all major brands across the Illawarra, Wollongong, the northern suburbs and the South Coast, charging $170 for a standard service call or basic repair plus any parts required, with larger work quoted before it starts. Free quotes are provided for replacement doors and 24-hour emergency callout is available on 0490 774 111.
If a spring has broken, stop using the opener. The spring carries almost all of the door weight, and forcing the motor against a dead spring shears the drive gear. That turns one repair into two. Pull the manual release cord and ring 0490 774 111.
Urgent faults
Problems that should not wait
These are the faults where leaving it a fortnight turns a modest repair into an expensive one, or where the house or business is not secure in the meantime.
Broken Garage Door Springs
A broken spring is the single most common reason a garage door stops working, and it is the one repair you should never attempt yourself.

Lift cables carry the entire weight of the door between the spring and the bottom bracket, and they fail from the inside where you cannot see it.

It happens constantly and it is almost never just the panel. The impact travels into the tracks, the rollers and sometimes the opener.

A door stuck open is a security problem and a door stuck closed usually means the car is trapped. Either way this is the call we prioritise.

A door off its tracks is unstable and heavy. It is not something to wrestle back into place yourself.

This is the part of the door that stops it closing on a child, a pet or a car. It is also the part people disable when it becomes annoying.

A commercial door is not a bigger house door. It cycles ten times as often, it carries a legal safety obligation, and when it fails the business stops.

Automatic Panel Lift Garage Door Repair
Panel lift doors have more moving parts than any other door type, which means more things to diagnose and more things worth fixing before they cascade.

Most openers we are called to are not actually faulty. They are healthy motors fighting a door that has gone out of balance.

Noise is diagnostic. What a door sounds like tells you fairly precisely what is wrong with it, and catching it early is what keeps repairs cheap.

Roller doors have fewer parts than sectional doors, which makes them simple to own and more consequential when the one part that matters fails.

Diagnose first, then quote
A surprising share of garage door callouts get misdiagnosed as motor faults when the real problem is door balance. We test the door before we talk about the motor, every time.
- Balance tested by hand with the opener disengaged before anything else
- The whole load path checked, because a broken spring usually takes a cable with it
- Parts quoted before fitting, with the option explained rather than assumed
- Opener limits, force settings, auto-reverse and safety beams reset and tested before we leave
- Written record of the work, which is what a manufacturer asks for on a warranty claim

Garage door repair questions
How much does a garage door repair cost in the Illawarra?
Doormec charges $170 for a standard service call or basic repair, plus parts if any are required. That covers travel, diagnosis and the labour on straightforward work. Larger jobs like spring, cable or motor replacement are quoted before we start. Emergency after-hours callouts are priced differently and we tell you the figure on the phone.
What is the most common garage door repair?
Broken springs, by a clear margin. A residential torsion spring is rated at around 10,000 cycles, roughly ten years at four openings a day, and once it goes the door becomes far too heavy for the opener to lift. Second most common is lift cables, which corrode internally and are the dominant failure in coastal suburbs.
Can you repair a garage door the same day?
Often yes, particularly for common faults where we carry the parts on the van, which covers most spring, cable, roller, hinge and remote work. Where a specific panel, curtain or motor has to be ordered we secure the opening first and complete the repair when the part lands.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
Repair is almost always cheaper while the door is straight, the panels or curtain are sound and failures are isolated. Replacement becomes the better spend once failures start arriving in sequence, once rust has perforated the curtain or bottom rail, or once the repair cost approaches a meaningful share of a new door. We give you both numbers rather than steering you.
Do you repair commercial garage doors and roller shutters?
Yes. Commercial doors are specified and serviced differently because of much higher cycle counts and workplace safety requirements including safety edges and beams. We work the Unanderra and Port Kembla industrial areas regularly and run 24-hour emergency callout for premises that cannot be secured.
Get it looked at before it gets worse
Ring Doormec and describe what the door is doing. We will tell you whether it is urgent, roughly what is involved and when we can be there. Standard service call is $170 plus parts.
