Automatic Panel Lift Garage Door Repair
Panel lift doors have more moving parts than any other door type, which means more things to diagnose and more things worth fixing before they cascade.
Quick answer
Automatic Panel Lift Garage Door Repair: what you need to know
A panel lift garage door, also called a sectional door, is made of horizontal panels hinged together that travel up vertical tracks and then back along horizontal tracks under the ceiling. Its moving parts include torsion springs, lift cables, drums, nylon rollers, hinges, track brackets and an automatic opener. Common panel lift faults are broken torsion springs, worn or flat-spotted rollers, elongated hinges, misaligned or bent tracks, panels damaged by vehicle impact, and opener travel or force settings drifting out of adjustment. A well maintained panel lift door will typically outlast two automatic openers, so replacing the opener alone is frequently the correct repair. Individual damaged panels can often be replaced without replacing the whole door, subject to profile and colour availability. Doormec repairs automatic panel lift doors of all brands across the Illawarra, Wollongong and South Coast for a $170 callout plus parts. Phone 0490 774 111.
Signs
How you know this is the problem
- The door judders, shudders or bangs as it travels rather than running smoothly
- The door opens partly then stops or reverses
- A gap appears between panels, or the door looks bowed when closed
- The door does not seal at the bottom, or bounces back up at the last moment
- Loud grinding or a metallic squeal from the rollers or the opener rail
Causes
Why it happens
Springs at end of cycle life, particularly on estate homes built in the same window
Nylon rollers flat-spotted from years without lubrication
Hinge holes elongated by wind flexing on wide double doors
Opener travel and force limits drifting out of adjustment over time
Panels creased by reversing incidents, which also usually bends hinges and rollers
Our process
How Doormec repairs it
- 01
Full mechanical inspection
We run the door manually with the opener disengaged and watch the whole travel, because most panel lift faults reveal themselves in how the door moves rather than in a single broken part.
- 02
Balance test
A correctly balanced panel lift door holds position anywhere in its travel. If it does not, the springs are addressed before anything else, because everything downstream is affected by balance.
- 03
Replace worn wear parts
Rollers, hinges, bearings and cables are replaced as needed. These are inexpensive parts that cause expensive damage when left.
- 04
Recommission the opener
Travel limits, up and down force, auto-reverse and safety beams are all reset and tested against the corrected door.
Answers
Automatic Panel Lift Garage Door Repair questions
What is the difference between a panel lift and a sectional garage door?
They are the same thing. Panel lift is the term used more commonly in Australia, sectional is the international term. Both describe a door made of hinged horizontal panels that runs up vertical tracks and back along horizontal tracks under the garage ceiling.
Can one damaged panel be replaced instead of the whole door?
Very often yes, and it costs a fraction of a full replacement. It depends on whether the manufacturer still produces that profile and colour, and whether the impact also bent hinges, rollers or tracks. We check the whole assembly before quoting, because a panel swap on a bent track will not run properly.
Why does my panel lift door judder as it opens?
Most commonly flat-spotted nylon rollers or worn hinges letting the panels move against the tracks. It can also be a track slightly out of alignment or a bearing beginning to fail. It is worth fixing early because a juddering door accelerates wear on everything it touches, including the opener.
