Are insulated roller doors worth it?
In a garage attached to living space, or a garage you use as a workshop or gym, yes. Insulated roller doors reduce heat gain noticeably on a west-facing opening and cut operating noise. On a detached garage used only for parking, the extra cost usually is not justified.
Can a roller door be automated later?
Yes, provided the door runs smoothly by hand and the drum and springs are in good condition. A roller door motor mounts on the drum shaft rather than a ceiling rail, so it needs very little space and no structural work. The prerequisite is a door that is already balanced, because a motor will not fix a door that binds.
