Garage door remote faults are usually one of four things: a flat remote battery, a remote that has lost its pairing with the opener, radio interference on the operating frequency, or a failed receiver in the opener head unit. Modern Australian openers use rolling code security on 433MHz, where the code changes with every press, so a remote that has been pressed many times out of range can fall out of sync and need re-pairing. Older fixed-code remotes have no such protection and are a genuine security weakness worth upgrading. Openers store remotes in memory and that memory can be wiped and re-paired, which is strongly recommended when a remote is lost, when a property changes tenants, or when a house is bought or sold. I lost my garage remote. Is that a security risk?
Yes, particularly if it was lost with anything identifying your address, like a car with rego papers in it. The fix is to wipe the opener memory entirely and re-pair only the remotes you still hold. That takes minutes and immediately makes the missing remote useless. Do not just order a replacement and leave the old one active.
Why does my remote only work when I am right next to the door?
Reduced range is usually a flat or fading battery, a damaged or poorly positioned aerial wire on the opener, or radio interference. LED lights and some solar inverters are common culprits on 433MHz. Try a fresh battery first, then check the aerial is hanging down freely rather than coiled up against the motor.
Can I get a replacement remote for an older opener?
Usually yes. Compatible remotes are available for almost all major Australian brands, including a lot of discontinued models, and universal remotes cover many of the rest. If your opener is fixed-code rather than rolling-code it is worth knowing that the security is weak by modern standards, and upgrading the receiver is inexpensive.
