A garage door motor, or opener, is designed only to overcome friction and a small imbalance, not to lift the full weight of the door, which is carried by the springs. As a result many apparent motor faults are actually door balance or mechanical faults. Genuine opener faults include stripped nylon drive gears, worn drive belts or chains, failed capacitors, faulty limit switches, corroded low-voltage terminals on wall controls and safety beams, and failed control boards. Openers can generally be repaired mechanically, but once a manufacturer discontinues the control board, typically around twenty years after release, replacement of the head unit becomes the only option. A quality door will normally outlast two openers, so replacing only the opener is frequently correct. Test the door before the motor
We disengage the opener and run the door by hand. If it is not balanced, that is fixed first, because a new motor on an unbalanced door will fail the same way.

Isolate the electrical fault
Wall control, safety beams, remotes and the head unit are tested separately, since intermittent faults are far more often connections than motors.

Repair or replace with a straight answer
If it is a gear kit, a capacitor or a limit switch we repair it. If the board is obsolete we say so and quote a replacement rather than chasing parts that no longer exist.

Recommission and safety test
Travel limits, force settings, auto-reverse and safety beams are all set and tested, and remotes are paired with old ones cleared from memory.

Should I repair or replace my garage door opener?
Repair it if the fault is mechanical and parts are available: gears, belts, chains, capacitors and limit switches are all normally repairable. Replace it once the control board is obsolete, which is usually somewhere past twenty years, or when repair costs approach half of a new unit. The door itself almost always stays either way.
How long does a garage door opener last?
Fifteen to twenty years is typical for a quality residential unit on a well balanced door used a few times a day. It is much less on a poorly balanced door, and much less again on shared strata doors where a residential-grade unit may be doing sixty cycles a day. Duty cycle matters more than age.
Can you add smartphone control to an existing opener?
Often yes. Many current-generation openers have a Wi-Fi module available as an accessory, and for older units there are universal add-on controllers that work through the existing wall control terminals. Which applies depends on the make and vintage, and we will tell you honestly if your unit is too old for either to be worthwhile.
What does a garage door motor service involve?
An opener service covers the head unit and the door together, because they are one system. We check and lubricate the rail, chain or belt tension, reset travel limits and up and down force, test auto-reverse and the safety beams, check the manual release, clear and re-pair remotes if needed, and check the backup battery where one is fitted. It is done as part of the standard $170 service call.
Do you do garage door motor replacement as well as repair?
Yes. Where the control board is obsolete, the housing is cracked, or the unit is simply too old to be worth further parts, we supply and install a replacement opener sized to the door. The door itself, tracks, springs and hardware normally all stay, which keeps a motor replacement far cheaper than a new door.
My garage door makes a noise but does not move. What is that?
A humming or grinding with no movement is the classic signature of a stripped nylon drive gear, which shears when the door has been forced against a broken spring or a jam. It can also be a failed capacitor, or the carriage disengaged by the manual release cord. Check the release cord first, and if the motor still hums without moving the door, stop using it so the gear damage does not spread.
