Garage Door Off Track or Bent Tracks
A door off its tracks is unstable and heavy. It is not something to wrestle back into place yourself.
Quick answer
Garage Door Off Track or Bent Tracks: what you need to know
A garage door comes off its tracks when a roller leaves the track channel, which is normally caused by vehicle impact, a broken lift cable letting one side drop, an obstruction in the door path, or worn rollers and loose track brackets allowing excessive movement. A door that is off track sits crooked, binds hard, and carries its weight through components not designed to take it, which is why forcing it back can bend the track permanently or drop the door. Bent tracks cannot reliably be hammered straight, because even a small deviation causes the roller to bind at the same point on every cycle and rapidly wears both roller and track. Correct repair involves securing the door, releasing tension safely, replacing damaged track sections, replacing affected rollers, and re-squaring the door before rebalancing. Doormec repairs off-track and bent-track garage doors across the Illawarra, Wollongong, Northern Suburbs and South Coast, with 24-hour emergency callout on 0490 774 111.
This is one we treat as a priority callout. If the door is stuck open, a vehicle is trapped, or the property is not secure, ring 0490 774 111 and say so when you call.
Signs
How you know this is the problem
- The door is visibly out of the track channel on one side
- A visible kink, bow or flat spot in a vertical or horizontal track
- The door binds hard at the same point every cycle
- A loud scraping or metallic snapping noise as the door passes one spot
- Track brackets pulled away from the wall or the ceiling
Causes
Why it happens
Vehicle impact, either reversing into the door or driving into a part-open door
A broken lift cable dropping one side of the door and racking it in the tracks
Worn rollers with too much play allowing the roller to jump the channel
Loose track brackets, often after years of wind flexing on wide doors
Obstructions in the door path, including stored items and bikes
Our process
How Doormec repairs it
- 01
Secure before anything else
A door off track is unstable. It gets clamped and supported before any tension is released or any component is removed.
- 02
Replace rather than straighten
Bent track sections are replaced, not hammered back. A straightened track binds at the same point forever and destroys rollers.
- 03
Replace affected rollers and hardware
Rollers that have jumped the track are almost always damaged, and hinges at the affected panel usually are too.
- 04
Re-square, rebalance, recommission
The door is re-squared to the opening, balance is checked, and the opener limits and safety functions are reset.
Answers
Garage Door Off Track or Bent Tracks questions
Can I put my garage door back on its tracks myself?
We would strongly advise against it. A door off track is carrying its weight through components that are not designed for it, and the spring is often still under full tension. People are injured doing this every year. It is also very easy to bend the track further while trying, which turns a moderate repair into an expensive one.
Can bent garage door tracks be straightened?
Not reliably. Steel that has been bent has work-hardened and lost its original profile, so even a track that looks straight again will hold a slight deviation that the roller binds against on every cycle. That grinds the roller flat and re-deforms the track. Replacing the affected section is the correct repair and is not expensive.
Why does my door only stick at one particular point?
That is the signature of a localised track problem: a kink, a flat spot, a loose bracket or a burr. Because the roller meets the same defect every cycle, the fault appears at exactly the same height every time. Faults that vary in position are usually balance, spring or opener related instead.
