Garage Door Will Not Open or Close

A door stuck open is a security problem and a door stuck closed usually means the car is trapped. Either way this is the call we prioritise.

Quick answer

Garage Door Will Not Open or Close: what you need to know

A garage door that will not open or close has a limited set of likely causes, and they can usually be narrowed down before a technician arrives. If the opener makes no sound at all, check power, the circuit breaker and whether the manual release cord has been pulled. If the motor runs but the door does not move, the drive gear has probably stripped or the door is disengaged from the carriage. If the door starts and reverses immediately, the safety beams are misaligned or obstructed, or the force setting is too low. If the door will not lift at all and feels extremely heavy by hand, a spring has broken. If the door is jammed part-way and sits crooked, a cable has failed or the door is off its tracks. Doors stuck open present a security risk and doors stuck closed usually trap a vehicle, so both are treated as priority callouts. Doormec offers 24-hour emergency garage door repair across the Illawarra, Wollongong and South Coast on 0490 774 111.

This is one we treat as a priority callout. If the door is stuck open, a vehicle is trapped, or the property is not secure, ring 0490 774 111 and say so when you call.

Signs

How you know this is the problem

  • Nothing happens at all when the remote or wall button is pressed
  • The motor runs but the door stays still
  • The door starts to close then reverses straight back up
  • The door is jammed part-way and sits crooked in the opening
  • The door is extremely heavy to lift by hand

Causes

Why it happens

  • A broken spring, which is the most common cause of a door that will not lift at all

  • A failed lift cable, which jams the door crooked in its tracks

  • Misaligned or obstructed safety beams causing the opener to reverse

  • The manual release cord pulled, disengaging the door from the opener carriage

  • A stripped opener drive gear

  • Power supply, breaker or GPO faults, particularly in older detached garages

Our process

How Doormec repairs it

  1. 01

    Rapid triage on the phone

We ask a short set of questions before dispatch so we arrive with the likely parts on the van rather than needing a second visit.

  2. 02

Make safe and free the vehicle

Where a car is trapped, getting it out safely comes first, even if the permanent repair follows afterwards.

  3. 03

    Diagnose the actual fault

We work through spring, cable, track, drive and electrical causes in order rather than guessing at the most expensive one.

  4. 04

    Repair and full safety recommission

Once repaired, balance, force limits, auto-reverse and safety beams are all reset and tested before we leave.

Answers

Garage Door Will Not Open or Close questions

My garage door will not open and my car is stuck inside. What can I do right now?

Do not keep pressing the button, because if a spring or cable has failed you may strip the opener gear as well. Pull the manual release cord to disengage the opener, then try lifting the door by hand. If it lifts, prop it securely and get the car out. If it feels extremely heavy or will not budge, stop, because a broken spring means the full door weight is unsupported. Ring us on 0490 774 111 and we will treat it as a priority.

My garage door reverses as soon as it starts closing. Why?

Almost always the safety beams. Check both lenses are clean and that both indicator lights are steady rather than flashing, and that nothing has knocked the brackets. If the beams are fine, the down-force setting may be too low, or the door may be binding somewhere in its travel and the opener is correctly interpreting that resistance as an obstruction.

How fast can you get to an emergency garage door callout?

We run 24-hour emergency service across our whole area. Response time depends on where you are and what is already booked, but a door stuck open or a trapped vehicle goes to the front of the queue. Ring 0490 774 111 and we will give you a realistic time rather than a vague window.

Can a broken garage door be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Most broken garage doors are repairable. A door that will not move is usually a spring, a cable, a drive gear or a safety fault, and all of those are parts rather than the door itself. Replacement only becomes the better option when the door panels or curtain are physically damaged or rusted through, or when several components are failing in sequence.
