What garage door types are available and how do you choose?

The four garage door types in common use are roller doors, panel lift or sectional doors, automatic doors, which is any of the above fitted with a powered opener, and commercial roller shutters. A roller door is a continuous corrugated steel curtain that rolls onto a drum above the opening, needing roughly 300 to 400mm of headroom and 75 to 100mm of side room. A panel lift or sectional door is made of hinged horizontal panels that travel up vertical tracks and back along the ceiling, needing around 300mm of headroom, or 175mm with a low-headroom kit, and 90 to 120mm of side room. Roller doors suit compact and older garages and cost less; sectional doors offer more profiles, better insulation and better sealing but use ceiling space. Commercial shutters are specified by duty cycle and carry additional safety requirements. Three numbers decide which door fits

Not style, not budget. Headroom, side room and backroom. Get these wrong and the door physically cannot be installed, which is the most expensive mistake in this trade.

Headroom: clear space between the top of the opening and the ceiling or any obstruction
Side room: clear wall each side of the opening for guides or vertical tracks
Backroom: clear depth into the garage for a sectional door to travel along the ceiling
Clear opening height, which on older garages is often lower than the nominal size and may not clear a modern vehicle
Whether the opening is square, since older homes frequently move 10 to 20mm over decades

How do I know which garage door will fit my garage?

Three measurements decide it: headroom above the opening, side room each side, and backroom into the garage. A roller door needs roughly 300 to 400mm headroom and 75 to 100mm side room. A standard sectional needs about 300mm headroom and 90 to 120mm side room, dropping to around 175mm headroom with a low-headroom kit. We measure the actual opening rather than the nominal one, because on older houses they differ.

Do you install doors as well as supply them?

Yes, we do both, and the installation is where most of the difference in a finished door shows up. Packing guides to follow an out-of-square opening, setting drum wrap so the door lifts square and commissioning the opener properly are all install-day decisions rather than product decisions.

How long does a new garage door take?

The install itself is normally a single day for a standard residential door. Lead time on the door depends on the profile, colour and size, with stock profiles and colours much quicker than custom. We give you the realistic lead time at the quote.
